Gemstone Spotlight: Tiger's Eye
Tiger's Eye Meaning, Properties and Benefits
What is Tiger's Eye?
Tiger’s eye is the name given to a golden hued variety of quartz. Like most quartz, it has a mohs hardness of 7, meaning it’s pretty durable. Due to its iconic shine, tiger’s eye is one of the more easily identifiable gemstones, making it more popular than some of the other quartz varieties.
Tiger’s eye earned its name because it looks like the eye of a tiger (shocking, I know). This stunning gemstone exhibits a rare visual phenomenon called ‘chatoyance’. Chatoyance is the appearance of a light band, called a cat’s eye, that seems to shine from inside the gem. Other stones that exhibit this phenomenon are moonstone, apatite, opal, iolite and kyanite.Share This Article!

Today, most tiger’s eye is mined in Africa but deposits have also been found in India, Mexico, Australia and the US (California and Arizona).
Red and Blue Tiger’s Eye
Although most commonly found as a yellow brownish stone, tiger’s eye also comes in red and blue varieties. To fully appreciate these varieties, let take a quick look at how this stone is formed.
Like I mentioned earlier, tiger’s eye is a form of quartz. This gemstone starts as a bluish grey mineral called crocidolite, that quartz forms around and eventually replaces. During replacement, iron dissolves and stains the quartz a yellow, golden-brown color… ta-dah, tiger’s eye!
Sometimes during mining, stones are found that still have the bluish grey mineral instead of the honey brown shades. We call this gemstone ‘hawk eye’ or blue tiger’s eye.
Even more rarely, some stones are found transitioning from blue to yellow. This spectacular occurrence creates ‘pietersite’.
Yet another variety is red tiger’s eye. Heat causes the yellow and brown hues to redden. Although this gemstone does occur naturally after wildfires and other events, it is more commonly the result of heat treatment in a lab.
Tiger's Eye Meaning
Every gemstone is said to have “metaphysical” properties that enhance certain feelings or character traits. Each stone has unique qualities that can affect you in unique ways.*
The meaning of tiger’s eye is as fascinating as the stone itself. Thought to represent the energies of the sun and the earth, this stone is considered very powerful.
Tiger’s eye benefits at a glance:
- Manifests abundance
- Instills willpower
- Nurtures compassion
- Enhances focus
- Brings emotional balance
- Promotes objective thinking
Tiger’s eye is said to be one of the stones of abundance. These stones are associated with living long, healthy, fulfilling lives. They are said to bring an abundance of love, money, luck and happiness. Tiger’s eye propels you towards abundance by establishing clear goals and honing the skills to accomplish those goals.
Energy from the Earth brings a steady, practical approach to thinking. These energies are considered grounding and expand your mind’s ability to focus. Enhanced focus leads to a deeper understanding of your goals, making it easier to set a path for success.
Emotions can lead to poorly thought out, impulsive decisions. By balancing yin and yang energies (the positive and negative forces of the universe), emotional turbulence can be avoided. Tiger’s eye aids in solving problems objectively by reducing emotion-driven decisions, helping you stay on track.
It is said that this stone’s light, honey-colored glow is the sun’s energy radiating out. This energy brings enthusiasm, making a dull task seem easy and quick. A positive mindset removes fears that could be holding you back. A little extra motivation can help get you through tough times that would have otherwise felt impossible to manage.
Tiger’s eye is also thought to instill creativity and resourcefulness. It helps you to recognize your talents and to align tasks with your abilities. This boosts self confidence and courage.
